Circle Squared

These square paintings share a structural connection: each composition is a circle within a square, crossed with a swooping, gull wing shaped line. The first nine of these paintings developed quite differently from all my other work; as I was painting the first one, ‘Perpetual Motion Machine’, I could see within it the next painting. It was as if I was opening a box, only to find another inside. As each one neared completion, another would emerge.
