Dress Codes
My work has always exploited the narrative possibilities of painting to explore complex issues using allegory, metaphor and symbols, but in my latest endeavour, I have been focusing on the raw material: the humanity and individuality of my models.
Dress Codes is an examination of gender in a collection of portraits presenting a wide spectrum of gender identities. Working collaboratively with each model, we construct a portrait that faithfully reveals each person as they choose to be seen. My intention is to gradually produce a catalog (somewhat like Auguste Sanders’ collection of archetypal representations of German society) documenting the changing landscape of gender constructs and presentations.
