Like the ‘Plaid’ series, these paintings seamlessly combine realistic, symbolic and surreal elements to express a narrative content. They also share a structural connection: each composition is a circle within a square, crossed with a swooping, gull wing shaped line across the top third. However, these paintings developed quite differently from all my other work; as I was painting the first one, ‘Perpetual Motion Machine’, I could see within it the next painting. It was as if I was opening a box, only to find another inside. As each one neared completion, another would emerge.
